More Ditz.

Ok, bear with me because Ditz has sent me for six & I still haven't recovered.

If you read Ditz comments about homeschool you will have gathered Ditz isn't madly enthusiastic about being educated; far from it in fact. Resistant, even. And we are officially on break. Please note, school is not compulsory this week. We are on break.

So Sunday afternoon I am standing in my kitchen bleary eyed from a well deserved nap wishing dinner would somehow just materialize without me having to actually do anything to make that happen when Ditz sidles up to me. That in itself is not so unusual. Ditz has a bad habit of draping herself over me to emphasise how small I am in comparison to her. *sigh*

'I'm going to regret this', says Ditz. (My mummy mind promptly leapt to all sorts of horrible things the child had done that she shouldn't have; disasters piled upon disasters. Thanks, Ditz.) 'But,'continued Ditz, 'SBS has a special on the Great Wall of China tonight.'

Scrape me up off the floor!!!! Not only did she tape the show she actually watched it with me tonight & commented on it intelligently! She's engrossed in Mythbusters now. (Please, no~one tell her that's school too!) I don't have the courage for it but I see how unschooling actually works. Plus NaNo has her writing 2 novels at once & the last extract she shared with me was impressive. Her writing has improved in leaps & bounds. Double plus, we've watched all the Jonathan Creeks & that (ssssh) is the basis of logic! I dread the day it dawns on Ditz all her favourite things are educational!

So Ditz has discovered Mythbusters. Good. Gives us something else to distract Ditz from the piano with.

You know my boys also drape on me to remind me how much taller they are...Nikolaus hit the 6' mark, officially.
My guys figured out most of their fav things qualify as education and have gotten so good they will define to me why playing a certain gamem should count. Sometimes them getting wise bites us back ;)

Kimba, Ditz has been a mythbuster fan for years. I'm surprized you didn't already know this & use it to your advantage. :D She & Dearest do the mythbuster thing together. I'm not a fan.

Mama bear, my oldest is 6'6'' & wears size 14 footwear. No~one makes size 14 footwear. However everyone is taller than my twins ~ me included! lol. They are not impressed.

I'm new enough at homeschooling that having a bit of a "classroom" type atmosphere, but I've also done this long enough to know that the children just love the "unschooling" way of doing things too. Basically, my problem is that I'm lazy. Just taking a book out and doing the next page takes little to no prep work.

Ok; I'm uneducated (lol). What's unschooling? You can direct me to an appropriate Web site if that's easier :-)

Heidi, I know what you mean. The only thing I like about math is it means no preparation. I hand Ditz her book & off she goes.

Unschooling or Natural learning. or child directed learning en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unschooling

I don't have the courage for this. I'd be terrified Ditz would never do anything at all & would never learn another thing but like lots of homeschoolers I find this happens sometimes anyway, usually when you least expect it, & on the oddest topics...

I've tried to get Cindy into Mythbusters, but no go...yet.. I think if I could find some episodes that pertained to specific interests of hers (hmm, have they ever tested anything to do with dogs?? LOL) I might catch her....

I love it when Cindy doesn't realise she's "doing school" too. *grin*

Hey - do you guys get the show called "Popular Mechanics for Kids"? Cindy likes that one, depending on the topics...Ditz might like it -- although, it's aimed at kids whereas Myhtbusters is aimed at a more general/adult audience.. she might find PMK a bit youngish... hard to say.

lol. Ditz just loves seeing things get blown up & one week they had a dummy they were blowing up in a plane or something that really amused her; she has violent tendencies. I only know Popular Mechanics as a magazine & no it's not on tv out here.
